Hello There!
My name is Desaray and I write books that introduce children to the African continent and help them gain cultural competence at an early age. I am committed to helping children explore the beauty of African cultures and understand the wisdom in African languages in a simple way. My hope is that my writing will help children discover common affirmations that exist among all people in order to grow their own confidence as global citizens.
In school, for me, writing was synonymous with grammar....and my grammar was terrible. Comma splices all over the place and I honestly still have no clue how to use a semicolon! So I concluded, that I'd always be the reader, never the writer. Decades later I am actually an author! Even if I never wrote another book (I definitely will...but for dramatic effect, go with it), achieving this much with something I thought was off limits for me, is such a wonderful feeling!
I am the Vice President of the Children's Book Guild of Washington DC and a member of SCBWI. When I'm not writing you'll find me sewing, drawing, or trying a new recipe. I am married to my college sweetheart and we live outside Washington DC, where I homeschool our four children.
